Patient care - HCM Clinic
What causes HCM?
Abnormalities in genes that code for muscle development are affected.
In HCM, the arrangement and pattern of cardiac cells to develop the muscle is abnormal. This pattern of cellular disarray is the substrate for the generation of abnormal growth and potentially lethal arrhythmias.
When a gene defect is present, its clinical presentation will vary in each family.
The prognosis is variable, based on the gene mutation. In individuals without a family history of HCM, the most common cause of the disease is a genetic mutation.
